New humanitarian crisis in Syria

The advance of the government army into northwest Syria has continued in recent weeks. At the center of international attention is the province of Idlib, and the western suburbs of Aleppo.

“We heard that Aleppo International Airport has reopened after being closed for years and years. But we are a little cautious in saying that, in the end, the city of Aleppo will have some peace and prosperity, and we are very cautious in announcing that our agony is over.”

In recent weeks the UN has denounced the enormous humanitarian crisis caused by the fighting, with hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing their cities, many of whom are children. And Pope Francis has returned to ask to pray for “the beloved and tormented Syria”.

“The suffocation of Aleppo from an economic point of view can still be seen, and there is practically no work for the population. We have so many questions, we have already suffered a lot, but this suffering continues for the people who live in the city of Aleppo.”

The threats of a return to war are still alive, but the Christian community of Aleppo continues to cultivate hope.

“In spite of all this, we have so much hope… so much hope in Divine Providence, which has never abandoned us. We have already announced in advance the journey in preparation for Holy Lent… May it bring us peace, may our beloved Syria, may our beloved city of Aleppo, may our Christian community – this little flock that has remained – see a little more peace, a little more serenity by the end of this Lent.”
